The Christmas decorations have been packed away for another year and it is no longer acceptable to eat chocolate for breakfast…the January blues have hit with full force!
With short days and cold, wet weather, it is easy to feel a little gloomy during the last of the winter months.
Elevate Physiotherapy can help with all things well-being so here are our top tips to kick start your year with positivity and pull you out of the post-Christmas slump.
- Keep active – regular exercise is great for both our physical and mental health. Where possible, go outside to exercise and make the most of those rare sunny days. A lunchtime walk to break up a long day at a desk is perfect.
- The great outdoors – wrap up warm and enjoy feeling the sun on your face. Soaking up the sunshine will increase vitamin D levels and boost your happy hormones. If you can’t get outside during the day, sitting by a window can also be a good option. Additionally, bringing the outside in with houseplants has been shown to trigger the release of serotonin.
- Breaking bad habits – in place of new year’s resolutions and starting something new, try to focus on breaking bad habits. This could be anything from stopping hitting ‘snooze’ on your alarm in the morning or avoiding endlessly scrolling through social media at night.
- Spend time with loved ones – this may be family, friends or fury companions. Give them a hug and check in with each other.
- Make plans for the future – big or small, having a plan gives us something to look forward to. Going out for a tasty meal, catching up with a friend or booking a holiday for a well earned break can give you a boost to get you through a busy week.
