Elevate Physio - Tips for winter running

Tips for winter running

Tips to keep you motivated and prepared for winter running.

  • 1. Set yourself a goal – This may be in the shape of entering a race or fun run, being able to run further than you have before, or just generally improving your health, but having a reason ‘why’ may encourage you to keep going on those cold winter days!

  • 2. Dress for the weather – Layering is the key to winter running. Thin, breathable, sweat-wicking layers will prevent clothes staying wet as we sweat, and making you cold. Ideally, you should feel slightly cool before you set off, and then will quickly warm up as you get going.

  • 3. Make sure you can be seen – As the nights draw in, it can be difficult to find time to run in the daylight – invest in some reflective clothing and a head/body torch to keep you safe running in the dark.

  • 4. Wear the right footwear – Wearing shoes with less mesh than summer trainers will help keep feet dry when running in the winter months. Also wearing socks that will not absorb water, but keep your feet warm will help!

  • 5. Keep going! – Committing to a sport like running during the winter shows dedication. Some runs will feel harder than others as the weather changes. Remember your ‘why’ and keep going, it is likely, the more runs you do, the easier and more enjoyable it will become. Keep thinking about that hot drink and packet of biscuits waiting for you at the end!
