Achilles Tendinopathy

The achilles tendon is the strongest and thickest tendon in the body. It is formed from the tendons of the soleus and gastrocnemius muscles that form the main bulk of the calf.

Occasionally, the achilles tendon may become inflamed, causing pain, swelling and reduced performance. This condition is typically termed ‘Achilles Tendinopathy’.

Achilles Tendinopathy is more common in active populations and symptoms may include; aching or sharp pain in the heel that is aggravated by activity or pressure to the area, stiffness in the heel or calf that occurs after periods of rest and tenderness or swelling to the Achilles Tendon.

For an acute injury, self-management strategies include applying ice to the affected area and activity modification until the pain settles. If symptoms do not settle with 7-10 days, it may be advisable to seek advice from a Physiotherapist.

Individualised strengthening and loading programmes for the Achilles Tendon have been proven to be an effective treatment for this condition. In addition, other Physiotherapy treatments such as soft tissue release and electrotherapy may help reduce symptoms and optimise healing.

The majority of people with Achilles Tendinopathy will improve with Physiotherapy management, however if left untreated complications of Achilles Tendon injury may result in reduced ability to carry out your normal activities and in severe cases, complete tendon rupture.
